Lahore Institute of Research and Development (LIRD) is a Lahore based Not-for-Profit organization founded in the year 2005. Our aim is to carry out quality, productive and impactful research in Pakistan in line with global trends.

Purpose & Objectives

LIRD’s mission is to contribute towards international effort to understand the biological basis of various mental illnesses which will lead to new treatments and cures. LIRD wants to build bridges between Pakistani institutions....

Future Endeavor

Our organization is actively engaging with researchers and collaborators from abroad in the field of psychiatric genetics to form networks to work on mental health issues that have global as well as local importance. We aim to collect cohorts on Depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in future.

What is Schizophrenia?

Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality, which causes significant distress for the individual, their family members, and friends. If left untreated, the symptoms of schizophrenia can be persistent and disabling. However, effective treatments are available. When delivered in a timely, coordinated, and sustained manner, treatment can help affected individuals to engage in school or work, achieve independence, and enjoy personal relationships.

What is bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder (formerly called manic-depressive illness or manic depression) is a mental disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, concentration, and the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks.
There are three types of bipolar disorder. All three types involve clear changes in mood, energy, and activity levels. These moods range from periods of extremely “up,” elated, irritable, or energized behavior (known as manic episodes) to very “down,” sad, indifferent, or hopeless periods (known as depressive episodes). Less severe manic periods are known as hypomanic episodes.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), a guide created by the American Psychiatric Association used to diagnose mental disorders, people with ASD have:

Difficulty with communication and interaction with other people
Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors
Symptoms that hurt the person’s ability to function properly in school, work, and other areas of life
