• What is the aim of this project?

The aim of this project is to explore the genetic causes of schizophrenia in Pakistani population and once we have achieved that it may prove helpful in devising and developing new treatment strategies for this chronic condition.

  • Who is conducting this research?

This research is conducted by the Lahore institute of research and development (LIRD) with national and international universities as collaborators.

  • Who is funding this research?

This research project is funded by the national institute of mental health America (NIMH).

  • Why are you enrolling healthy people?

It’s a case control study in which we aim to find the difference in the genetics of mentally healthy and mentally unhealthy people to identify the possible causal mutations (deleterious changes) in DNA.

  • Is this some sort of genetic test and do I get my test result back?

No it’s not a test and you won’t get any result back. In fact it’s an addition to efforts of developing a test.

  • Is this a government project?

No it’s not a government project.

  • Do you have approvals from relevant authorities?

Yes we have research ethics approval from National Bioethics committee (NBC). We have security clearance from the security agencies as well. The government of Pakistan is well aware of our research project.

  • Why do you pay 500 rupees?

It’s a notion of thanks for your time.

  • What will you do with our blood?

Since it’s a genetic study, we will have to isolate DNA from your blood, conduct experiments and then compare it with that of patients.

  • Why Pakistan is the site for this research, why don’t they conduct it somewhere else?

They have already conducted such projects abroad and the data on Pakistani population is lacking. Generating data on Pakistani population will benefit the patients here in future if in case some treatment is developed.

  • Blood samples related issues

We will take small amount of blood sample required for the research. The quantity is very less that it will have no effect on your health or on your working routine.
